The Phyletic Museum is something special: it is one of the few museums dedicated to evolutionary biology and the only one that has phylogeny in its name. It was founded by Ernst Haeckel (1834-1919), who is still known worldwide today. Over decades, scientifically significant zoological collections were built up at the museum. However, neither Haeckel nor the collections can be adequately presented at present – which is why we are planning an extension and comprehensive modernization of the Phyletisches Museum.
To show what would be possible, the architect Christian Meyer-Landruth has produced an initial design for us, which we present here. It shows: Despite the limited space, something is possible here! We could show larger special exhibitions and allow visitors direct access to the previously hidden treasures in the stacks for the first time. And we could set up an exhibition about the zoologist Ernst Haeckel, which could show his work, but also his contradictory and problematic sides.
We have already gained important supporters from business and politics for this project. We invite everyone to participate who can help the Phyletic Museum to develop further and become a place where evolution is understood.
